Mission Statement

The Black Mountain Center Foundation is committed to improving the lives of persons with specialized intellectual developmental disorders and persons with specialized dementia. The goal of the Foundation is to benefit the residents and the statewide community served by the Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center. Black Mountain Center Foundation is committed to sustaining a diverse community and an environment that is welcoming, respectful and encouraging to all. We foster a culture of inclusion that celebrates and cultivates diversity along multiple dimensions, including race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, socioeconomic status, religion, ability, culture and experience.

What is the Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center?

BMNTC is a specialized healthcare facility operated by the State of North Carolina specifically for the care of people with diagnosis of dementia who have aggressive or combative behaviors or persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.

BMNTC is administered by the NC Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities within the Department of Health and Human Services. BMNTC is located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina situated on 40 acres in Black Mountain, North Carolina about 16 miles east of Asheville.

Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center’s Services & Program Areas

Specialized Dementia Program

BMNTC’s Specialized Dementia Program is unique because it specifically serves those individuals whose aggressive or combative behavior make other living arrangements unavailable. Realizing that a diagnosis of dementia affects all aspects of a person’s life, BMNTC addresses the physical, social, psychological, and spiritual aspects of quality living. Each indivdual’s plan of care is developed, implemented, and monitored by the interdisciplinary team.

Favorable staff to resident ratio and professional service alleviate many behaviors/combativeness commonly associated with persons with dementia.

BMNTC works closely with residents’ families and community agencies to seek the most appropriate placement when the specialized services of their program are no longer needed.

Specialized Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Program

The life expectancy of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities increased by nearly 50 years between the early 1930’s and the early 1990’s. With longer life spans has come the recognition of premature aging effects, unique medical needs and the link between intellectual and developmental disabilities and dementia. Many aging individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in North Carolina require a special level of support beyond that which can be provided by their aging families or community living settings.

BMNTC staff members have expertise in medical concerns ad diagnosis and treatment of dementia in persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, specialized nursing facility level of care and enriched life planning for seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Care Plans and Life Plans focus on physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects to enhance quality of life.
